Centre on Wednesday extended the deadline for linking bank account with Aadhaar ahead of tomorrow’s hearing of the matter in the Supreme Court.

A tweet by the Ministry of Finance said, “It has been decided by the Government to notify 31st March, 2018 or six months from the date of commencement of bank account based relationship by the client, whichever is later, as the date of submission of Aadhaar number & PAN or Form 60 by the clients to the reporting entity,”

The government also said that the decision to extend the deadline was taken after various representations as well as inputs received from banks. This decision is basically for the existing bank accounts which are more than six months-old. The deadline for existing accounts to link their bank account with Aadhar number is March 31, 2018, while for the new accounts opened after October 1, 2017, the deadline will be six months from the date of opening the account.
The government had earlier made it mandatory for all bank accounts to be linked with Aadhaar.

This move has been criticized by various activists, saying it violates the fundamental Right to Privacy. Activists have also challenged the validity of Aadhaar, which collects and stores biometric data like finger prints and iris scans, saying it might be misused.
It must be noted that all other deadlines to link Aadhaar with services remain unchanged.
