Aadhaar Data Breach: You Can Get Billions Of Aadhaar Details Just For Rs 500

It has been only few months that the UIDAI claimed, “Aadhaar data is fully safe and secure and there has been no data leak or breach at UIDAI”, and this Wednesday a journalist was able to gain access to the Aadhaar database of more than a billion Indians just for Rs 500.
As per reports, The Tribune journalist purchased a service being offered by anonymous sellers over WhatsApp that provided unrestricted access to details of more than one billion Aadhaar numbers created in India, on Wednesday. The correspondent was able to access all details of any individual just by entering their Aadhaar number on the portal.

The UIDAI portal which can only be accessed by administrators of the Aadhaar database is down Right now, if you type URL portal.uidai.gov.in on browser you will receive ‘This site can’t be reached’ message. Further investigations revealed that the racket from Jalandhar is six months old and were started as a WhatsApp group.
However, UIDAI has completely denied The Tribune’s report of any data breach. Board called the story a “case of misreporting”, ANI says, “Unique Identification Authority of India denies media report titled “Rs 500, 10 minutes, & you have access to billion Aadhaar details” & calls it is a case of misreporting. UIDAI assures that there has not been any Aadhaar data breach & that the data is fully safe & secure: UIDAI”

This is not the first case of an Aadhaar data breach, a report in November revealed that personal details of many Aadhaar users were made public on 200 central and state government website.
