Delhi-based designer Ruchika Sachdev has become first Indian woman designer to win prestigious the womenswear International Woolmark Prize for year 2017/2018 in Florence, Italy. The IWP are most-desired awards for the budding fashion designers. Many biggies of the fashion industry like Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld are its past winners.
Ruchika impressed the judges there with her unique way of visualizing the issue of consumer waste in fashion with traditional techniques of recycling. Excited with her triumph, Ruchika said, “This is a huge opportunity to expand on what I do and keep doing it.”
Ruchika studied at the London College of Fashion and returned to India to launch her label Bodice. She uses natural dying techniques and offers employment to local Indian artisans. With this reputed prize, Ruchika will now receive a sum of $200,000 (approximately 1 crore) to expand her brand.
The winners of International Woolmark Prize 2017/2018 were chosen by a prestigious judging panel. The announcement was done in a room full of editors from leading fashion magazines and other giant industry names.
