A Egypt female singer has reportedly been sent to jail for two years on charges of debauchery after she appeared suggestively eating a banana and other fruit in a music video of her song “I Have Issues”.
Twenty five year old singer Shaimaa Ahmed, known professionally as Shyma, was arrested last month after the video raised outrage in the country. In the music video she is seen dancing provocatively before a classroom of grown men.
On Tuesday, a court found her guilty of “inciting debauchery” and publishing an indecent film and her as well as video director behind the bars for two years.
Egyptian television shows which are discussing the media outcry around Ahmed have either refused to play the video or shown only short sequences of footage on moral grounds.
After getting such backlash Shyma has apologized, saying she never meant to cause offense to people.
Ahmed wrote in a statement on her now-deleted Facebook page “I didn’t imagine all this would happen and that I would be subjected to such a strong attack from everyone,”
Egypt’s public prosecutor’s office extended Shyma’s detention for a week, two days after her arrest. Arrest warrants have also been issued to directors of the music video.
This is not the first time that an Egyptian court has punished women for what they consider indecent act. Last year, a court sentenced three female dancers for six months each in prison after declaring them of triggering debauchery in music videos.
