1. Saans

This show, directed by Neena Gupta, revolves around the topic of adultery. This was a topic which was less addressed by the media at the time. It shows the intricacies of married life and takes a non-judgmental look at those involved in an extra-marital affair.

2. Hasratein

This show is based on “Adhantari”, a Marathi novel. It portrays the life of the lead character Savi, who is having an affair with her boss, who is married. This controversial topic is discussed with finesse and looks at the woman’s perspective on relationships and marriage.

3. Dastaan

Dastaan revolves around two lead characters who are involved in a business rivalry. The lead roles are played by Ashish Vidyarthi and Parmeet Sethi. This is the first Indian TV show that was shot outside India – in Dubai.

4. Banegi Apni Baat

This show portrays the life of a few college friends and follows them through their careers and relationships. It talks about controversial topics like pre-marital sex and in a non-preachy non-forceful manner it deals with family values and love.

5. Shanti

This series became a cult TV show, widely embraced by its viewers. It shows the lives of Bollywood producers Raj G.J. Singh and Kamesh Mahadevan, who live in “Shanti” mansion. Dark secrets from their past are dredged up when a journalist named Shanti visits them in order to pen their biography.

This is series where each episode tells a different story – more like a consolidation of short movies. Several directors like Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Kashyap and Tigmanshu Dhulia made a few episodes for this show, which made it all the more interesting.

7. Amanat

Amanat marked the debut of the Lagaan actress Gracy Singh. It revolves around the life of Lahori Ram and his daughters and the bond they share. It beautifully portrays family relationships and values.

Navneet Nishan plays the title role – Tara in this female-centric television show. IT revolves around the life of 4 women who make bold decisions. The characters are not perfect, in the sense, they have their own faults which make them seem more humane and relatable by the audience.

9. Kora Kagaz

Directed by Asha Parekh, this show revolves around the life of a woman who had been left by her husband for another and how she braves through the hurdles thrown in her path. The main character is played by Renuka Shahane.

10. Astitva… Ek Prem Kahani

This show portrays the love and life of Dr. Simran, played by Niki Aneja, who enters into a relationship with a guy 10 years younger to her. Faced by severe objection from both their families due to the age difference, the lead characters struggle to uphold their bond.
